Cardiac Synchronization Technology (CST), Improved CPR Therapy

The Technology

Cardiac Synchronization Technology (CST) will utilize advanced circuitry, signal processing and algorithm to synchronize external compressions with the weak residual mechanical heart action present in pulsless electrical activity (PEA) type cardiac arrest. This results in higher blood perfusion pressures and improved outcomes for patients receiving Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Quest, teaming with Emergency Medicine physicians at the University of Colorado Denver Health Sciences Center, successfully demonstrated in Phase I work that synchronized compressions provide up to 110% increase in coronary perfusion pressure. Additionally, the research indicated that correctly synchronizing heart compressions during CPR may be critical to patient survival. The National Institutes of Health have funded Phase I and II programs for this work.

The Application

CST aims to increase survival rates for patients experiencing pulseless cardiac arrest to synchronize automated life support devices to the residual heart rhythm and aortic pressure pulse. Its application is especially important for the aging U.S. population where cardiac arrest is a major health issue and cause of death. Improvements in resuscitation techniques could have tremendous societal, economic and personal benefits.
